Ofqual - Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation

Our processes for regulating awarding organisations have changed. If you are an awarding organisation find out how the changes affect you.
Information for:

What we do

who are we

At Ofqual, we’re responsible for maintaining standards, improving confidence and distributing information about qualifications and examinations. We regulate general and vocational qualifications in England and vocational qualifications in Northern Ireland.

We give formal recognition to bodies and organisations that deliver qualifications and assessments. We also accredit their awards and monitor their activities (including their fees).

We’re not directly controlled by the government but report to parliament.

Our business plan for 2011/12 sets out our approach to regulation and the key themes for us during this year.

You can read more about our duties in the Apprenticeship, Skills, Children and Learning Act (2009)

Our brochure Introducing Ofqual 2010/11 is designed to help you to understand who we are and the work we do, including our statutory objectives and strategic priorities.

Who’s who at Ofqual

The day-to-day work of Ofqual is directed by the management group who provide both leadership and strategic direction. Overseeing the work we do are the Ofqual Board. You can see how our organisation is structured on our staffing diagram (organogram).

Ofqual Board

Ofqual Board

The Ofqual Board is the legal authority ultimately responsible for the regulation of qualifications, examinations and tests. It also provides leadership and direction, setting the strategic aims, values and standards of the organisation.

Agenda, minutes and papers for the meetings of the Ofqual Board and the Ofqual Committee is available to download. (Prior to 1 April 2010 the Ofqual Committee oversaw the operation of Ofqual.)

Ofqual Strategic and Management Groups

Ofqual Board meetings

Our Executive Board provides management leadership to the organisation and addresses issues of strategic importance to the organisation. Our work is broken down into four directorates, each with one strategic leader.

Our wider management group is the senior team who manage our day to day operations and provide leadership to the organisation.
